Secret Proposal Photography Session | Cajas National Park
This groom to be reached out to me as he was planning his next trip to Cuenca, Ecuador. This was going to be a special one. Having been in a long distance relationship with his partner for several years, he was planning to ask her to be his wife and wanted to book a proposal photography session to capture this special day. I let him know I would be happy to help and could arrange it, but getting her to say yes was all on him. Given how thoughtful he was to be planning all this, I hoped that his partner was going to say yes.
We discussed their relationship and what they loved about Cuenca, I showed him a selection of locations and we finally settled on a mid morning shoot in the Cajas National Park. As most who have been know, the weather in the Cajas is unpredictable at best and generally cold but mid morning would give us the right amount of light and time to assess the weather conditions on the day.
After a couple of delays, one involving an expired passport with a missed flight and another due to weather, the day of the proposal arrived. Unfortunately, the weather in the original location was not cooperating, rain and low light meant we had to change. Whenever we plan a proposal photography session in Cajas, it is essential to have a backup location. In this case, it was the beautiful Hosteria Dos Chorreras. With some quick thinking and great acting on behalf of the guy, the surprise proposal was under way.
Approaching the couple as they were getting into their car, we asked if they would be willing to be stand in models. We were photographers from out of town and our models had canceled last minute. We urgently needed to find replacements. His acting was spot on. For a second, he had me thinking I had approached the wrong couple. After some hesitation from his partner, she finally agreed to help us get the shots we needed, as long as it was quick. She was clearly not excited and was only doing this as her partner was insisting.
I had the couple casually walk around to help loosen them up in front of the camera before asking them to play a little game. As she was looking away, he dropped to his knee, in great form. When she turned around, she found him kneeling, ring in hand. Giving them space to let the moment unfold naturally, I waited for her answer. Thankfully, for all involved, she said “Yes”.
We were so happy to be there to document this special day and be part of the start of this new journey for this wonderful couple. Continue below to see their reactions and how the rest of the session turned out after the surprise was over.
