Secret Proposal Photography Session | Cajas National Park

This groom to be reached out to me as he was planning his next trip to Cuenca, Ecuador. This was going to be a special one. Having been in a long distance relationship with his partner for several years, he was planning to ask her to be his wife and wanted to book a proposal photography session to capture this special day. I let him know I would be happy to help and could arrange it, but getting her to say yes was all on him. Given how thoughtful he was to be planning all this, I hoped that his partner was going to say yes.

We discussed their relationship and what they loved about Cuenca, I showed him a selection of locations and we finally settled on a mid morning shoot in the Cajas National Park. As most who have been know, the weather in the Cajas is unpredictable at best and generally cold but mid morning would give us the right amount of light and time to assess the weather conditions on the day.

After a couple of delays, one involving an expired passport with a missed flight and another due to weather, the day of the proposal arrived. Unfortunately, the weather in the original location was not cooperating, rain and low light meant we had to change. Whenever we plan a proposal photography session in Cajas, it is essential to have a backup location. In this case, it was the beautiful Hosteria Dos Chorreras. With some quick thinking and great acting on behalf of the guy, the surprise proposal was under way.

Approaching the couple as they were getting into their car, we asked if they would be willing to be stand in models. We were photographers from out of town and our models had canceled last minute. We urgently needed to find replacements. His acting was spot on. For a second, he had me thinking I had approached the wrong couple. After some hesitation from his partner, she finally agreed to help us get the shots we needed, as long as it was quick. She was clearly not excited and was only doing this as her partner was insisting.

I had the couple casually walk around to help loosen them up in front of the camera before asking them to play a little game. As she was looking away, he dropped to his knee, in great form. When she turned around, she found him kneeling, ring in hand. Giving them space to let the moment unfold naturally, I waited for her answer. Thankfully, for all involved, she said “Yes”.

We were so happy to be there to document this special day and be part of the start of this new journey for this wonderful couple. Continue below to see their reactions and how the rest of the session turned out after the surprise was over.

Welcome to Yindi Photography | Cuenca, Ecuador

Hi all and welcome to the first blog from Yindi Photography Cuenca Ecuador, thanks for checking us out.

Yindi Photography began in 2025, right here in Cuenca. The name Yindi has its origins with the Aboriginal people native to Australia. The meaning of Yindi is closely tied to the sun, more specifically, the essence of the sun, and is a name given to both boys and girls. Symbolising warmth, light and vitality, these are integral parts to photography and this name speaks to the qualities we hope to bring to each session.

After living on the coast of Ecuador for several months, we discovered Cuenca. High in the mountains, far away from the mosquitoes, surrounded by the awe inspiring and seemingly endless Andes Mountains, this UNESCO world heritage city has now become our home and base for our business. On the night of our first visit to the city, we visited the Turi lookout and knew it was going to be tough to beat on our list of options in Ecuador. The mix of amazing natural surroundings, fresh produce from the abundant markets and combination of modern city living with the rich culture made the decision easy for us.

With so much natural beauty around Cuenca, combining our passion for photography, the outdoors and adventures seemed like the perfect mix for our business. Waterfalls, mountains, grasslands, rivers and more create the backdrops for unforgettable experiences and being so close to the city makes it all accessible.

While the weather in and around Cuenca is often described as “4 seasons in one day”, with a bit of planning, a good attitude, flexibility and a backup plan, this place makes for some stunning outdoor photography shoot locations.

Catering to all who love wild places and a bit of adventure, we love helping people bring their ideas to life. As partial introverts, we understand how uncomfortable the feeling of standing in front of a camera, feeling self conscious and not knowing what to do with your hands can be. Building a connection before each session allows us to have genuine interactions and hopefully a few laughs along the way, putting you at ease. Guidance to create actions rather than static poses means you don’t need to be wondering if your hands are looking ‘normal’. Because when you’re able to be comfortable in yourself, thats when the best photos will happen.

Gone are the days when families sat around and flipped through photo books, reminiscing on holidays and big life events for fun. As our consumption is increasing, it seems to be watering down the appreciation these once cherished moments.

As more companies move towards AI, we feel the need for authentic images and genuine connections with people and business is even more important at this time than ever before. Real images, real people and real experiences are not replaceable. As everyone is being exposed to more and more AI content, the desire to consume real content is growing and Yindi Photography is here to help create that content with you.

We feel so lucky to be able to be part of special moments and to create photos that carry with them cherished memories. A massive thank you to all who we have had the pleasure of working with so far in this wonderful community here. If you are interested in photography services in Cuenca or anywhere in Ecuador, send us a message today. We’d love to hear from you.
